Decemeber Monthly Commentary

1st December 2021 by Mark Potter Leave a Comment

My comments for this month will be published later in the week as I want to listen to a particular presentation on December 2nd and also get a more definite take on the opposing views being circulated about the latest Covid-19 variant which are currently causing some market turbulence.

New core article on the site for subscribers!

27th September 2021 by Mark Potter Leave a Comment

In response to feedback, I have written a new article in the ‘How to” series entitled ‘How to Find the ‘next best thing’ and make rational sell decisions (fund switching) (m)‘

It looks at the process of generating ideas for future or updated investments, probably at the sattelite holding level for many and how to make rational decisions about fund switching.

This is a big subject and maybe that’s why I have not addressed it before. The article is only intended to give you a starting point because I believe this is an aspect of investment management where some aptitude or experience is required. I say that because I think I have got slowly better at it over the years.

As always feedback and questions are welcome.

There be no Midweek Musings this week, but my October Watching Brief will be published very soon!

Midweek Musings – gone AWOL

23rd June 2021 by Mark Potter Leave a Comment

This week we have all time record day and night time temperatures where I live – up to 35C in the day time and not dropping below low 20s at night. This makes me feel very lethargic and not up to writing anything of relevance or use!

I am off to find somewhere cool!

In fact, nothing is happening that I have not already written about. Markets think central banks will act to contain inflation, then think they won’t and that little farce repeats. Regulators in the USA promise to investigate monopoly power and the monopolists spend a few spare millions lobbying to reduce any real impact. And so on.

The main point is that there is a great deal of money sloshing around and for the moment capitalism is at its most rampant.

I will be back next week with some insights, I hope! Enjoy your summer, whatever you are doing!

If you you use btinternet for email, read this

24th March 2021 by Mark Potter Leave a Comment

Unfortunately, it appears that BTinternet are blocking mails from my email server, so if you have registered to be notified of posts, you won’t receive the emails that are automatically generated. I became aware of this for the first time today.

How you allow my mails through will vary according to the mail client you are using. I assume you can “whitelist” web sites and email adressses on the BTinternet mail setting web site (I am sure there will be one!).

One possibly helpful option is to send me an email because spam filtering algorythms will not usually block sites that have received outging mail via the same client.

The problem may resolve itself anyway.

A recommendation – this year’s BBC Reith Lectures

16th December 2020 by Mark Potter Leave a Comment

I an grateful to one of my subscribers for letting me know that this years lecture series is currently being delivered by Dr Mark Carney, formerly Governor of the Bank of England. His theme is ‘How We Get What We Value’.

The first 2 have been fascinating and take a line that somewhat surprised me – addressing the need for capitalism to reconnect with society and morality.

I listen on BBC Sounds , but I think this link will get anyone to the right place –
