Its Not Harry

Comment and opinion for retail investors in the UK

YAP – (Almost) nobody expects the unexpected!

21st July 2025 by Mark Potter Leave a Comment

The chief ‘weapons’ of a stock market correction are surprise, or fear and surprise, or …. (please carry on based on your familarity with Monty Python).

I should say that a logically predictable inflection point in the normal market cycle that can be anticipated is clearly not a surprise to the well informed (for example October 2021) but a ‘crash’, such as in October 1987 or the onset of the great financial crisis of 2008 will be unexpected by many market participants and that is the very reason that it progresses to become a severe valuation reset that may go on for as long a several years. In simple terms, there is panic.

‘The Impact of the Highly Improbable’ is a now legendary book by Nassim Taleb that formalised the Black Swan theory, essentially the idea that outlying events, or those deviating from common and current experience may have a disproportionate impact on perception and in consequence reactive behaviour.

The idea is not that black swans are unknown (apparently, they were known about by the Romans) but that in regions where white swans are seen daily in numbers, suddenly seeing a black swan comes as a shock and is almost never anticipated (because how could you?).

YAP – Trump and Europe (with 30% tariffs)

14th July 2025 by Mark Potter Leave a Comment

Given my obvious relative enthusiasm for investing in Europe relative to the USA, readers may be wondering if I would now take a different view after Trump’s most recent announcement of a 30% tariff on what I think is meant to be the EU trading block.

YAP – homely advice, AI rapper style

14th July 2025 by Mark Potter Leave a Comment

With Nvidia becoming the world’s largest company on the back of enthusiasm for AI, I continue to test out the capabilities of the free AIs that are on offer to the public as apps for mobile devices (ie are usually cloud based). I have ChatGPT and Deepseek on my phone, for example. I also plan to see if CoPilot, which is inertia sold now with the Office 365 recent upgrade and reprice, will do some of my spreadsheet work.

It is clear to me, as I have already written, that people will soon find that AI ‘assistants’ (or ‘agents’ for more complex work – a new class of software tool in their own right), are easier to use and give more comprehensive and revisable results in a natural language format when compared to the old processes of ‘googling’.

It is also known that the main reason Apple’s share price is well down lately is that Apple have a lot of work to do in this area, being well behind even the previously lumbering Microsoft.

My latest test, inspired by thinking how much simple good sense, even simplified behavioral science, was in the now classic Kenny Rogers song ‘The Gambler’ that came up in a play list delivered to me by Google Music, was to ask my AI ‘helpers’ to write a song that would represent sound advice to UK retail investors. In other words, create the Not Harry anthem!

YAP – helping undo DOGE vandalism

13th July 2025 by Mark Potter Leave a Comment

Readers will know that Trump’s cuts to USAID have been savage, amounting to 98% plus of funding for conservation, biodiversity and climate-related programs. One project severely impacted is the Jane Goodall Institute Tanzania project which had been expecting nearly $30M over 5 years that it will not now get.

DOGE – Delusional operations guaranteeing excrement

Jane Goodall is perhaps best known as the ‘chimpanzee’ member of Louis Leakey’s 3 muses, the scientists he mentoured and commissioned to help the great Apes. Dian Fossey was of course murdered working with gorillas. Birute Galdikas, a Canadian with Lithuanian roots, is the orang utan specialist and I often visit a planting of historic oak species named in her honour at the botanical gardens in Kaunas.

A charity that I support at absolutely no cost to me, but which is hugely effective in planting trees, is Ecosia, a search engine that behaves exactly like all others (although with better ethics) and delivers responses that at the moment come from Google or Bing, but will eventually come from a home-grown European search engine.

Ecosia will give $100,000 to the Jane Goodall project which they say will save 360,000 seedlings that might otherwise have been lost and sustain 20 local nurseries. They will also supply other logistical and local support, being experienced opeartors globally in reforestation.

Personally, I cannot see why anyone who cares about sustainability and has the opportunity to do something positive at no personal cost would not use Ecosia at least as one of a suite of search platforms. I have for years and it’s the default on all my devices. Please give it some thought.

YAP – the great American giveaway

7th July 2025 by Mark Potter Leave a Comment

I recently saw a notable video posted by an American specialist in international relations whose analysis I have noted as insightful and accurate over recent years (he is an associate professor at the University of Pittsburgh). In essence he made the point that Russia’s next, possibly already under way, ‘invasion’ will not be of the Baltic States, Finland, Georgia or Moldova but will come (has started?) in the form of hybrid warfare attacks on countries in NATO and the EU. Russia is in fact an extremely capable enemy when it comes to cyber warfare (one of the key elements of hybrid warfare), likely much better equipped relatively than it is with tanks and fighter jets these days.

One of the reasons for this is not widely known, I suspect, and I only became fully aware of it recently. This is the theft of an entire library of the most advanced hacking tools in the world from the US National Security Agency’s special projects department, a few years back. In fact, no deliberate theft actually happened. It was I believe more a case of access being left open by misbehaving employees and the automatic operation of anti-hacking tools that had roots in Russia stumbling on an open door.

Deep Dive – July 2025

1st July 2025 by Mark Potter Leave a Comment

Half time scores

We are now at the end of the first 6 months 0f 2025 and more significantly, a little under that much into Trump 2.0.  What has been the actual impact of the orange one’s political and economic ‘policies’’ on markets?  To what extent have our advance calls on the widely anticipated instability and general weirdness that followed the election of Donald J Trump protected our portfolios or better still, left us exposed to new opportunities?
